Barrhead Enhancements

Barrhead EnhancementsBarrhead Main Street

East Renfrewshire Council are considering further proposals and projects to improve and enhance the centre of Barrhead.

Under immediate consideration is the creation of Commercial Enhancement Zones at Cross Arthurlie Street and Main Street. The purpose of these is predominately to address the needs for Commercial Environments on the two streets.

At present there is a proposal to appoint, in the first instance, a team of Consultants (most likely led by Landscape Architects). They would then propose a design statement for the whole of the Town Centre, perhaps being used over a period of up to five years across all projects. Where at all possible this would involve private developments to effect a consistent approach to public realm, streetscape, lighting, CCTV, street furniture, signage etc, all in an effort to create and reinforce a good quality identity for the town centre.

On completion of the design statement, the Council intends to consult as widely as possible, with particular emphasis on retailers and other occupiers in the two streets. These parties will have the opportunity to influence firstly the statement and secondly on how it might be applied to each of the streets in a practical sense. The consultation will also include any ancillary issues such as traffic management, parking, security and maintenance. The Council then expect to develop and evolve up to three contracts for the physical works which would be implemented in a phased manner. Subject to final approval and possible refinement the Council expect to put the consultancy out to tender in August 2007.
