Chamber History

The History of East Renfrewshire Chamber of Trade and Commerce.

1964:

In 1964 A group of local businesses in the Clarkston area realised a desire for collective representation as up to that point there was nothing of that kind with a local perspective. Accordingly they set up the Clarkston Business Club to look after their own interests in the bigger picture and to liaise with the local authority.

1968:

As the membership of the Business Club expanded, so did the matters they were dealing with. In 1968 the Clarkston Chamber of Trade was formed. The Chamber was now involving itself in local business matters including the positioning of parking restrictions, positioning of car parking facilities and local policing.

1975:

1975 saw the formation of Strathclyde Regional Council. The Chamber evolved into the Eastwood Chamber of Trade and Commerce to shadow the newly formed Eastwood District Council.

2000:

The demise of Strathclyde Regional Council saw the formation of East Renfrewshire Council which was essentially the old Eastwood District with the addition of the villages of Neilston and Barrhead and surrounding area. Accordingly, the current East Renfrewshire Chamber of Trade and Commerce was constituted to represent the interests of businesses in all these areas.
