Town Centre Regeneration

Like many similar sized towns, Barrhead has suffered in recent years with the closure of local industries like Shanks and Nestle, leaving behind a town with fewer opportunities for employment and all of the associated problems that this can bring. Better Barrhead is a ten year, £100m plan that will help ensure that Barrhead is a town that meets the need of the community, existing businesses and potential investors.

The regeneration of East Renfrewshire’s town centres – and in particular Barrhead – is something that we have contributed significant time and attention to as we consider regeneration to be a central plank in revitalising both the socio-economic makeup of our towns and the vitality of the entire Authority.

We consider that investing in Barrhead in particular will deliver disproportionately high returns on public investment, including social returns. With this in mind the Chamber was more than happy to lend its support for the Authority’s bid to the Scottosh Government's Town Centre Regeneration Fund, which was awarded £1.4 million to invest in strategic regeneration sites across Barrhead. We have also lent our support for a second bid to the Fund, to invest in key areas across Eastwood to include Newton Mearns and Clarkston.
